Japanese for Busy People: Kana Version
Vol 1
This is the coursebook we used in class ('Japanese 1'). I
can't overstate the importance of using the kana version of
the book rather than the romaji version.
If I have a criticism of the book, it's that the content is
rather dry. As the title perhaps implies, it's aimed at
serious, business types. But of course you augment this
with other materials, so that's not a serious failing.
The explanations of grammar are excellent, progress is
structured, and the appendices are invaluable when it comes
to revision for exams.
A kana workbook, an audio CD and I believe a video, are all
available to accompany the book.
